Marie Vasse: Predation starts small: rethinking an ecological concept from microbes to macrobes

What changes when organisms live in communities? How does interacting with individuals that are similar (or very different) affect ecological dynamics and evolutionary trajectories? In this seminar, I will explore these questions through the lens of trophic interactions in microbial communities, these tiny, largely invisible universes in and around us.

I will start with a simple case of one bacterial prey species and its bacterial predator, considering their coevolutionary dynamics. I will then turn to the relationship between community richness and productivity, and ask how predation affects this relationship, examining how empirical observations compare with theoretical predictions. Finally, I will present a surprising case of predator–prey reversal and use it to propose a broader conceptual framework for thinking about predation. This framework is inspired by microbes, but I will discuss how it extends to macrobes and how it might invite us to reconsider what predation is.
