Current Studies in Chestnut Genetics at CREA Caserta (Italy): Results and New Perspectives (T1)

Angelina will provide a brief introduction to CREA, the leading Italian research organization dedicated to agri-food supply chains, outlining its overall structure and highlighting the activities of the Research Centre for Olive, Fruit and Citrus Crops, with a particular focus on the facilities located in Caserta.

She will then present CREA's research on chestnut genetics through a story shaped by questions raised by stakeholders and the answers that research has been able to provide. How can molecular markers support the management of genetic resources in the field? Are traditional cultivars truly distinct from one another? How far have ancient chestnut varieties spread across Europe? How reliable are the genetic tools currently available? And can we breed our cherished traditional cultivars while preserving their genomic background?

Some answers arise from the rapid and cost-effective genotyping protocols available through KASTRACK (https://kastrack.crea.gov.it/) and the associated KASTRACKdb, whose potential can be further expanded through the results of the ongoing collaboration with BIOGECO. Other insights have emerged from studies investigating somatic mutation rates in ancient grafted chestnut trees. Some new CREA perspectives on chestnut breeding by genome editing will be also discussed on demand.
